Afterwords
This project is inspired by the history of the Red House in Ximending (1908). I was fascinated by the cultural harmony of the era: the Octagon building sold elegant Japanese and Western imports, while the Cross-shaped market in the rear was a thriving hub for Taiwanese local vendors. Historical accounts show how prosperous this era was, with a single five-ping((16.5 m²)) booth often supporting seven families.
Drawing from the oral histories of families who worked in these markets, I sought to recreate this vibrant world. My goal was to present more than just history; I wanted to showcase the Taiwanese spirit, a blend of personal bravery and deep community warmth. Through MeiMei’s journey, this ride celebrates a community that protects its own, honoring the people who made the Red House a legendary landmark.
Last but not least, there are some fun stories behind the characters’ names: “MeiMei" is a common, affectionate way to address a little girl in Taiwan, literally meaning “younger sister" (mèimei). You’ll often hear it used by local breakfast shop owners or neighbors. As for her dog, “Tanji," his name is a classic choice in Taiwan. In Taiwanese, it sounds like the phrase for “making money." Since MeiMei’s family runs a business in the market, naming their dog “Tanji" is a perfect reflection of their hopes for prosperity!
